Ben Schmidt and Ffion Tynan triumph in Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters

The winners of the prestigious Sir Henry Cooper golf tournament were presented with their trophies and jackets on Sunday 23 June 2019 as they saw off fierce competition to take the prestigious Junior Masters title.

The tournament took place at Nizels Golf & Country Club in Hildenborough, Kent where 126 boys and 27 girls from across the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and Germany competed for the coveted under-18 title.

The winner of the boys’ competition was rising golf star and tournament favourite Ben Schmidt, from Rotherham Golf Club in Yorkshire, in his debut appearance at the Junior Masters. This is Ben’s second win of the season following on from becoming the youngest winner of the Brabazon Trophy, which is awarded to the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play champion.

Ben said of his experience at the Junior Masters: “It’s amazing to win such a great tournament. The course was in great condition and was really looked after by all the people involved. I’m moving on to pre-qualification for The Open and long term I want to make it on to the professional circuit.”

The winner of the girls’ tournament was talented Welsh golfer Ffion Tynan in her third appearance at the Henry Cooper. Nizel’s Ladies captain, Pat Morecroft, presented Ffion with her prizes.

Ffion said: “This tournament is one my favourite events in the golfing calendar, it’s such a great experience and friendly, positive atmosphere. My best performance in the Henry Cooper prior to this was fifth place in 2018 so I’m delighted with the win this year. Next, I’ll be representing Great Britain & Ireland in the Vagliano Trophy, which is a women’s amateur international match between Great Britain and Ireland and the Continent of Europe. My long-term ambition is to play college golf in America in 2021.”

Competitors also contend for the Nations Trophy, which consists of three players from each country, with the highest two scores counting towards the win. The winning England team (Max Hopkins from Bishops Stortford Golf Club, Thalia Kirby from Stoke Park Golf Club and Ben Schmidt from Rotherham Golf Club) was awarded the Nations trophy.

Competitors were supported by their family and friends as well as Nizels members and local golfers who came to enjoy the day and watch the exceptional golf.

The Junior Masters is recognised by Golf England as one of the leading Junior tournaments. Next year the event will be held between 19 – 21 June 2020.
