Take a stroll for National Walking Month this May

This May is National Walking Month! As a free, easy and low impact form of exercise, there’s a lot to love about putting one foot in front of the other.

National Walking Month provides resources and information to help people get active, discover local walking routes and incorporate walking into their lives. For most of us, walking is a highly accessible form of exercise that comes with a myriad of health benefits. From the daily commute to grocery shopping, it can be easily built into our routine sometimes without a second thought.

Health benefits of walking

But walking has a host of health benefits that make it worth paying attention to. Through improving circulation, it can boost heart health and improve our fitness levels, reducing the risk of high blood pressure. A natural energy booster, walking also has a range of mental health benefits including reduced stress and anxiety and clearing your mind.

Low impact alternative

Walking is a great form of low intensity and low impact cardio which carries a lower risk of injury than running. This makes it a great option for those with less mobility, weakened joints or in rehabilitation from an injury.

Maximise your walking potential

If you enjoy a casual walk with friends or down to the shops, a few small tweaks can help get the most out of this underrated workout.

  • Find an incline – routes with hills will give you a more challenging workout, adding more resistance and making you work harder. And if you’re working harder, you’ll be burning more calories in the process.
  • Add bodyweight challenges – stopping at intervals to complete a three-minute short bodyweight circuit can add an additional level of effort into your walk, working all the muscles in your body. Use a nearby bench to try step ups, push ups or tricep dips.
  • Add weights – up the intensity by adding ankle or wrist weights on your next walk. This will force your muscles to work harder, increase your heart rate and burn more calories.
