For the past three years Leonie has been a dedicated member of Benton Hall, but her journey is about so much more than fitness. Like many women, she began experiencing perimenopause symptoms a few years ago. Initially, she tried a low dose of HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), but after some time she made the decision to stop. “I couldn’t see or feel any real impact,” she says, reflecting on the trial.

Instead, Leonie turned her attention to the one constant that was making a clear difference: her health and fitness routine.

“It’s so important for me to attend the club regularly,” she shares. “It helps me maintain a balance - both physically and mentally.”

In addition to navigating menopause, Leonie was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and hypermobility. This made strength training a crucial part of her wellness plan. “I go to Dawn’s classes on Mondays and Fridays - they’re absolutely vital to why I keep my membership,” she says. “The exercises are challenging, but they’ve massively improved my physical health. I’m the strongest I’ve ever been, and I can feel and see the benefits in everyday life.”

Fitness became more than just a part of her schedule - it became a lifestyle. Leonie even changed her job to better align with her ability to attend the club during the week. “It’s not just about weight management (still working on that bit!),” she laughs. “Coming here is a habit now, and it’s part of who I am.”

She’s also been exploring wellness routines beyond the gym, incorporating supplements and recently trying collagen as part of her evolving approach to wellbeing.

Her advice to others just starting out on their menopause journey? “Talk to your doctor and watch the two Davina McCall programmes - they’re so eye-opening. Involve your family too. I’m a mental health and menopause champion for the government department I work in, and I believe this needs to be talked about openly - across generations.”

The benefits Leonie has found go beyond physical strength. Her energy, confidence, and sense of community have all grown through regular class attendance. “The classes are always welcoming and inclusive. I’ve made so many friends over the years,” she says warmly. “One day, I’d love to have the confidence to walk into the gym!”

Leonie’s story is a reminder that the menopause journey doesn’t have to be isolating - with the right support, it can become a time to regain strength, build connection, and embrace a new chapter with resilience.
